What is a Medicare Advantage plan?
Medicare Advantage (also called Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Instead of getting your hospital and medical coverage directly from Original Medicare, you get it through the plan.
Most Medicare Advantage plans typically combine:
- Part A: hospital coverage
- Part B: medical coverage, such as doctor visits and outpatient care
- Part D: prescription drug coverage, included in many plans
Many plans also include additional benefits that Original Medicare does not cover, such as routine dental, vision, or hearing benefits. Benefits, networks, and costs vary by plan, county, and ZIP code.
Good to know: If you join a Medicare Advantage plan, you’re still in the Medicare program, and you generally keep paying your Medicare Part B premium, even if the plan itself has a $0 monthly premium.
Common types of Medicare Advantage plans
The right type depends on your doctors, how you like to get care, and your budget.
HMO plans
Health Maintenance Organization plans usually ask you to use doctors and hospitals in the plan’s network, except in emergencies. Many require a primary care doctor and referrals to see specialists.
PPO plans
Preferred Provider Organization plans have a network too, but you can usually see out-of-network providers, often at a higher cost. Referrals are generally not required.
Plans with drug coverage (MAPD)
A Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan includes Part D coverage, so your medical and drug coverage are in one plan.
Special Needs Plans (SNPs)
Designed for people with specific needs, such as people who have both Medicare and Medicaid, or people living with certain chronic conditions. You must meet the plan’s eligibility rules.
Costs to understand before you choose
A plan’s monthly premium is only one part of the picture. When we compare plans, we look at:
- Monthly premium: some plans have a $0 premium, but other costs may apply
- Copays and coinsurance: what you pay for doctor visits, specialists, hospital stays, and tests
- Deductibles: for medical care and for prescriptions
- Maximum out-of-pocket: the yearly limit on what you pay for covered medical services
- Drug costs: how your medications are covered, and at which pharmacies
How we compare plans for you

- We review your prescriptions and preferred pharmacy
- We look at the costs that matter for how you use care
- We note any extra benefits, such as dental, vision, hearing, or OTC
